Nurturing the Next Generation of Engineers: Inside Bryan Okah’s Internship Journey at Cully

We recently caught up with Bryan Okah, who just completed his internship as a Design Engineering Intern at our Leixlip headquarters. Bryan reflected on his hands-on experience, the mentorship he received, and what life inside Cully’s engineering design department really looks like.

Real-World Engineering Across Critical Irish Infrastructure

From day one, Bryan was embedded directly into multidisciplinary teams delivering key infrastructure upgrades across municipal and environmental sectors. Rather than being confined to theoretical exercises, he worked on live national projects:

  • Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs): Supporting design activities for critical effluent and process control systems.

  • National Telemetry Survey (NTS) Projects: Helping map and standardize remote monitoring assets across Ireland’s water supply networks.

  • Dam & Reservoir Infrastructure: Gaining exposure to complex, large-scale water storage and flow control operations.

“This gave me the chance to experience different areas of the water industry and see how engineering design contributes to real-world infrastructure.”

Hands-On Technical Development: From Concept to P&ID

During his internship, Bryan developed practical technical capabilities that directly bridge university academics with industry standards. His day-to-day responsibilities included:

  1. Developing & Updating AutoCAD Drawings: Drafting accurate site layout designs and pipe network drawings to support on-site engineering teams.

  2. Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs): Collaborating across disciplines to modify and refine technical schematics that govern automated control systems.

  3. Engineering Standard Alignment: Learning the rigorous attention to detail needed to ensure every technical drawing complies with national utility and safety standards.

Culture, Collaboration, and Mentorship
